Oracle Associate Training (OCA) Course

Online Oracle Certified Associate Classes

The Oracle Certified Associate credential proves to employers that you know your stuff when it comes to databases, and especially Oracle databases. If you want to be an expert in databases, in particular those made by one of the world's leading software companies, then this is the course for you. It is Oracle's first grade of certification, and it can be upgraded to high levels of expertise through one or more of Oracle's upgrade exams. The certification never expires, though new certifications and upgrades are available with every new product version and technology Oracle produces. Becoming Oracle Certified Associate (or OCA for short) is great for those who haven't had much formal education, as there are no official academic requirements to join the course (though some prerequisite knowledge is required – see below). An OCA can open many doors in the IT world, and can also help those already working with databases and servers who want to gain more qualifications to help improve their salary range and employability. Please note that your choice of study center may ask for a basic level of education, such as a high school diploma or GED.

Through the course, you will become an expert in databases, from database design to installing, configuring, programming and administering Oracle database systems. You can also specialize in certain areas, such as database design, server administration and Java application development, meaning you can concentrate on the area most interesting to you, or simply most important for your work. Exam topics depend on the field you wish to specialize in, but can include options such as:

  • Solaris or Linux server systems
  • SQL integration
  • Database security and networking
  • Application development
  • Database design and administration

The course consists of classroom study, lab work and practical experience. At the end, you will take one or more exams and must pass to gain the qualification. You can choose to study at either a technical school, community college or via Oracle University, who have instructor-led training at affiliated sites around the world and virtual classrooms online, complete with self-paced study guides for its products and technologies. This is great if you want to work while you study, or simply fit in the hours around your other commitments. An OCA is best for those looking to become database administrators. Here is some more information on the role.

As a database administrator, your job will be to manage systems and software to build and maintain computer databases.

In this role, your responsibilities will include:

  • Security. This includes ensuring that employees have proper access rights to areas of the database and preventing access by unauthorized personnel. You will also need to be aware of electronic attacks by viruses, Trojan horses and worms, and be able to prevent these attacks.
  • Ensuring that data is backed up, regularly and in a secure, reliable manner.
  • Monitoring the performance of the system and needs of users. Constant attention to this allows you to upgrade or alter the system to suit user needs and enhance performance. For example, in larger organizations, databases may need to be available at all hours, seven days a week, which requires expert attention and maintenance. However, because of this, you may find that you are asked to work or be on call on evenings and weekends.

Before you start your OCA, you will need the following:

  • A basic working knowledge of personal computers
  • Some knowledge and understanding of operating systems (such as Windows 8, 7, XP, etc. for Microsoft computers, and Linux for other machines).
  • Relational database concepts (such as MySQL databases)
  • Logic structures
