How do you Choose the Right
Degree? |
|
So you want to attend a college or
university but you don’t know exactly what degree to get.
Well don’t feel bad you are in the majority. In fact over
80% of the students entering into college for their first
year have no idea what degree they want to attend. The great
thing is you are taking that ever so important first step to
actually getting a degree.
The first thing to now is that most of
the jobs available in the marketplace don’t require you to
have a specific degree in the field that you will be working
in. The fact of the matter is that many employers want a
hard working individual that has a degree but they tend to
look the other way if it isn’t exactly in the same field. A
good example of this would be if you are applying for a
marketing position at a company. Sure it would be nice to
have a marketing degree but I’ve seen plenty of job postings
where the employer wants someone with a management or
finance degree, or they just want 2 years of experience in
marketing.
Now not all jobs or positions are as
liberal and actually do require you to have a high level of
experience or training in order to work in that position.
Those jobs such as any field in medicine or perhaps any job
that requires you to carry a license would be regulated
more. The best advice I can give you is to get a degree that
you enjoy. Enroll in a degree that you feel you would enjoy
learning about and then worry about what type of career to
get involved in after you are done. I personally have over 4
different degrees and I’m going something completely
different than I went to school with and making more money,
but I enjoy what I’m doing and those 4 degree definitely
helped me get jobs over the years.
So if this is your first year of
college here are my recommendations:
- First search around and view all
the different subjects and degrees that are available.
These can range from small 1 year programs to 4 year
degrees. A wide variety of medical, business or just
plain management degrees are available. The key is to
find something that you like and something that you feel
you can finish.
- Take a look at the school and
decide if you want to attend a live school or one that
can be completed online. We have other articles that
will show you what to look for each type of school.
- Research is key here. Select
multiple schools and request the free information. This
allows you to compare the costs and benefits of each
school. Since all schools are different it important
that you learn what schools offer financial assistance
or payment plans. Most will give government assistance
and that is important.
- All schools will mail you out a
school packet for free so you should never pay for
anything ever while you are evaluating the different
schools. If you want to become a medical biller then
find all the schools that teach this and request the
information. The schools are real nice and will mail you
out the information so you can evaluate it.
- Take your time. Be sure to go over
all the info and find the school that best suites your
needs and desires at this time. If you can only work on
this during the night time or weekends then an online
school might be your better option.
- The last thing is to have fun.
Sounds weird but school shouldn’t be a chore or a
hindrance. School should be fun and you should be
learning the skills necessary so that once you are done
you can easily move into your field and start a new
career.
